In Hong Kong, people who organise demonstrations get arrested or disappear. Protest leader Mae Yang knows that. She’s been preparing to martyr herself for years.
Pete Anderson drags himself out of an aimless, lost existence and starts his own company. But his girlfriend walks out, and his new career demands too much time and effort. Taking a break, he visits Hong Kong and meets Mae. Given the danger she’s in, any relationship between them will be short-lived. Besides, Mae really can’t be seen with an Englishman, the personification of colonialism. Yet time and again, the two are drawn to each other.
When Mae’s protest starts, everyone knows it will end in tear gas and rubber bullets. But will Mae escape, and does she even want to?
