I thought I’d write a series of short posts about some of the locations that feature in Do Not Keep Silent.
The first is The Fringe Club, which has been active for 40 years, offering artists a place to showcase their work without any kind of selection process. It’s a non-profit arts organisation. This makes it a perfect symbol for Mae to take Pete on their date, because The Fringe is associated with freedom of expression.
Situated on Lower Albert Road, Central, the building that would eventually become the Fringe was built by a Scottish surgeon in the 1890s. He used it as a depot to sell dairy products to European settlers. By the 1970s, the building had fallen into disrepair and the Hong Kong Fringe Club bought it in 1983.
In Do Not Keep Silent, Mae and Pete eat in the The Vault restaurant, then venture upstairs to a gallery where Hee Sin/Kezia is exhibiting her work.
